"PONIKO" by 保村 成

Sliding in another (very short) dōjinshi review before a couple of off-topic posts to follow - including a tidbit on my first ever job as a professional game designer, and a last few Doom / Strife projects I had in development hell, and are now close to fruition. I'm also told I have to work of my Master's thesis or something. Lol.

Anyway, sometimes there's little to say about a dōjinshi, and I mean that in the best way possible. One of the things I like about the medium is how 'humble' it feels, in a way:  just artists putting out their work for the world to see, no frills. Of course, sometimes these artists happen to have also worked on stuff like Idolmaster, Sword Art Online, Umaru-chan... you get the idea. Yes, Homura Minori is another one of those artists who alternate dōjin work with professional output (which I am not familiar with, as I don't care much for either SAO or Idolmaster). When it comes to self-released work, like many other artists do they have a fetish character of sorts, in this case busty big girl Poniko - who happens to be the subject of... ahem, "PONIKO" vol8.

This pinup collection, in full A4 color and dating 2019, is as straightforward as they get: a series of illustrations depiction the original character Poniko in a variety of poses and outfits, with minimal text and no background whatsoever. There is some occasionally shaky anatomy here and there, but overall both the quality and the style of the illustrations is perfectly in line with the work one might expect from an anime concept artist and animator: clean, bold lines; strong color fields, lots of dynamism. Bonus point for the faux-magazine cover, I love those.

So yeah, not much more to say -nice collection, an artist to take a look at if you're into that contemporary anime aesthetics. And also sorry for the somewhat dingy pics as always, but I actually received a complaint from a featured artist that my pictures were 'too high quality' and constituted illicit redistribution or something XD I'm not taking chances with professional artists.
